Park Species Detail: Connery et al. (1998): Reported this species during searches of watersheds within the park during 1997. Witt (1997) and Long (1987) report this species in areas adjacent to the park; Breeding documented on Mount Desert Island; Widely distributed on MDI. Sharp (1997) Recorded during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996; not sure if observation was within park boundaries. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) common spring through fall, rare in winter. Nests have been found in a number of borrow pits. A bird can almost always be found somewhere between Babson's Brook (= Kitteredge Brook) and the lower part of Somesville Harbor until the extreme cold of late January. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Bond (1969) burrow observed in the side of a bank by the sea. Species is often seen along the coast and about the borders of lakes and ponds. Bond (19??) common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Long (1951) a pair nested in a gravel hole in Southwest Harbor during 1949 and 1950. a bird observed at Somesville on 18 February 1950. Tyson and Bond (1941): Common during summer on MDI. Sullivan (1937): Summer resident; common from May to September (Pellew); a few records given but no locations. Farley (1935) observed 3 pairs on MDI, observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931): Common in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931, less generally distributed; Pairs at Somes Sound, Northeast Harbor, Little Harbor, Long Pond, Jordan Pond, and Upper Hadlock Pond. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 3 June 1916. Allen (1899): rather common on MDI between 1880 and 1899., Park Species Data Source: Connery et al.
