Notes
Park Species Detail: Connery et al. (1998): Reported this species during searches of watersheds within the park during 1997. Sawdy (1997) Verified by sight, sound, or sign at Indian Point between 21 April and 28 May 1997. Coman (1987) Numerous on MDI, within and outside park boundaries. Coman (1981): plentiful on MDI, numbers soared after the 1947 fire. Acadia National Park (1976): reported as common to abundant for the years reported between 1939 and 1976; reported populations ranged from a high of 2,300 in 1942 to a low of 630 in 1968. Allen (1969): Present at Western Point. McLaughlin (1968) The population density does not appear to be excessive on MDI; population has apparently decreased in recent years and most indications point to a continuation of this pattern. 785 deer were removed from MDI annualy (1960-67) by park personnel in an attempt to reduce browsing pressure. Davis (1961): During the winters, deer were observed repeatedly at the Beech Hill and Otter Point stands. Manville (1960) reports that this species has continued to increase on most areas of Mount Desert Island and estimates a population of 1,000 to 1,500 individuals. Stupka (1933) suggests that 200 deer are on Mount Desert Island and only 50 of these are within park boundaries. Manville (1942): species are abundant at all elevations on MDI; estimates that 500-600 deer on the island would be a 'safe figure'; albino deer have been repeately observed., Park Species Data Source: Connery et al. (1998): Coman (1987); Allen (1969); Davis (1961); Stupka (1933) Legacy NPSpecies information may no longer be applicable, please remove if it is not applicable. In legacy NPSpecies Residency was Unknown with comment: Coman (1987) fawns are born in May and June on MDI. No details of fawns within the park.
