Occurrence Notes
An uncommon permanent resident in areas of rocky Great Basin desertscrub. Chukar can be found on the north and west portions of the Kaibab Plateau, in the Kanab Creek drainage, and around Fishtail Mesa. It has recently expanded its range along the base of the Vermilion Cliffs and up the Paria River (Corman and Wise-Gervais, 2005) and has been seen along the Colorado River in Glen Canyon. South of the Grand Canyon, Chukar are present in Cataract Canyon and on Hualapai lands. This non-native species was originally introduced in a number of areas on the Arizona Strip in the 1950s and 1960s by the Arizona Game and Fish Department and private ranches (Brown et al. 1985). Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
