Abundance Notes
This is a fully Holarctic species being known all across Europe and Asia from the Azores to Japan. In North America it is almost as widespread especially in northern regions, but in the east it is found as far south as Florida and Texas. However it is missing from the western states, except for a single record from Colorado. In summer the entire life cycle is usually just under a month, so there are usually several generations per year. The mature larva overwinters as a prepupa in the pupal cocoon, with pupation and hatching occurring early in the spring. The larvae are predators of aphids, psyllids and probably other soft bodied arthropods. They are found on both coniferous and deciduous trees and adjacent underbrush. (Oliver Flint, 1/25/10)
