Park Species Detail: Terrell, 1970: Frequent; rocky woods and cliff tops in areas 4 [Carderock to Cropley (parking area near Angler’s Inn)], 5 (Bear Island), 6 (Great Falls; islands overlooking Falls), 7 (Great Falls to Swain’s Lock). Fl. May. Wiegand, 2001b: An uncommon plant species occur in slightly more elevated areas of overwash savanna and woodland habitat, where flooding is less frequent and less intense. Fringe tree (Chionanthes virginicus) is scattered throughout the prairie and savanna habitats . . .. It is not particularly abundant, although it is widespread here, usually growing in a sandy substrate on or between rocks and boulders. Found at 2 sites.
