Native to North America (Long 1981) and Maine (Palmer 1949). Palmer (1949) lists one sight record in Maine on 29 November 1947.

Witt (1997) reports this species in areas adjacent to the park. A record at "Otter Point" on October 24, 1996 (Witt 1997) may have been within park boundaries.
Jones (1986) reports a record of this species at Bass Harbor Bar during May 1986; likely not within park boundaries.
Russell (1984?) Accidental. 3 records as follows: 1 in Cromwell Cove on 28 December 1969 (F. Anthony, E. Thompson, and W. Russell); 1 in Hulls Cove on 23 November 1970 (D. Gallinat et al.); and 1 in Cromwell Cove on 26 December 1971 (E. Thompson et al.).
Favour (1974): Present in winter at Compass Harbor.
Favour (1970) reports this species on the 28 December 1969 MDI CBC; identified by Frank Anthonyin an east shore Bar Harbor Cove. Also observed on 3 January 1970 in the Bar Harbor Cove.
