Park Species Detail: Checklist information (abundance) updated 4/8/03 by professional judgement of Bruce Connery, ACAD wildlife biologist. Coman (1987, 1981) Unknown on MDI before 1925, rare in the 1940s and 1950s; observed in the park. Becoming common on MDI now, especially in the Cadillac Mountain area and other mountains. Acadia National Park (1976): Considered rare and seldom observed in the park for the period 1965-1976; a population of 12 was estimated on MDI during 1965. Manville (1960) Species has increased slowly on MDI, 5 authenticated records on MDI, all in the vicinity of Cadillac Mountain. Manville (1942): Became established on MDI since 1925 and are uncommon. 20 are estimated on MDI in 1933 and numbers are slowly increasing (Thompson and Smith). Stupka (1933) estimates 20 woodchucks on MDI and 3 of these are within park boundaries. Bailey (1925) reported that woodchucks were unknown on Mount Desert Island before 1925, but were present on the adjacent mainland., Park Species Data Source: Coman (1987); Coman (1981); Manville (1960); Stupka (1933)
