Long (1987): very rare on MD; only recently recorded (within last 20 years). Pair was observed on the border of Beaverdam Pond in 1968 and 7 "cock nests" were located, but no nest with eggs or young discovered. Russell (1984?) rare spring through fall; males have been seen occasionally in late May and early June in cattail marshes, particularly in the Seal Cove and Bar Harbor areas; a pair was seen in Beaverdam Pond during June of 1968 (J. Bond). Adamus (1983) Approaches northeastern part of its breeding range in Maine. Local in much of its Maine range. Breeding scattered throughout southcentral Maine.
