Park Species Detail: Terrell, 1970: Rare; rocky, rich In area 4 [Carderock to Cropley (parking area near Angler’s Inn)],. Fl. May. Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 2001: Two previously reported occurrences for Narrow-leaved horse-gentian (Triosteum angustifolium) were successfully updated (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line). Both were small occurrences containing 9 and 42 individuals. All the plants in these occurrences were heavily browsed by deer. Many consisted of nothing more than a short stub with a single pair of leaves and flowers in the ads. Four other previously reported occurrences for the species in the gorge were not successfully updated. The species is reported from only a few other small populations in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated. Two (2) new sites were documented for Narrow-leaved horse-gentian (Triosteum angustifolium), a state endangered plant species. Both were small occurrences containing fewer than twenty individuals. All the in these occurrences were heavily browsed by deer. Many consisted of nothing more than a stubby stem with a single pair of leaves and flowers in the ads. Three (3) other previously reported occurrences for the species in the gorge were not successfully updated in spite of specific searches for these occurrences. The species is reported from only a few other small populations in Maryland.
