Occurrence Notes
Audubon reported this now extinct subspecies on MDI (Audubon 1834) but was likely referring to the Spruce Grouse (Witt 1997; Jones 1986, Palmer 1949). Occurrence as far north as Maine is hypothetical (Palmer 1949).

Notes
Park Species Detail: Considered extinct (Sibley 2000).
Hypothetical, but likely a false report for the species (Palmer 1949, Witt 1997).
Jones (1986): No other evidence for this form of Prarie chicken exists for Maine, except for an Aroostook county record mentioned in conjunction with the MDI report.
Palmer (1949) "An extinct bird whose occurrence as far north as Maine is hypothetical" Audubon (1834: 492) mentioned this bird as occurring on MDI. Notes that another name for the Spruce Grouse was the Haith Hen or Heath Hen.
Tyson and Bond (1941): Formerly found on MDI, according to Audubon.
