Notes
Park Species Detail: Terrell, 1970: Local in low woods near river in areas 2 (Chain Bridge to Lock 10 parking area opposite Plummer's Island), 8 [Swain’s Lock to Pennyfield Lock (north end)]; locally abundant 1/2-1 mile north of Great Falls in bottomland woods area 7 (Great Falls to Swain’s Lock). Fl. Late April-early May. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Nyctelea (Ellisia nyctelea), a plant species currently listed as extirpated from D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. A small group of seven plants was growing in well-drained, alluvial sand in floodplain forest habitat. The plants were scattered across a 5x10 meter area. This occurrence was last reported and collected Above Ead's Mill (i.e., above Fletcher's Cove) by L.F. Ward in 1881. Suitable habitat for nyctelea is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence could be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Found at 1 site. A Presumed Extirpated (SX) plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 2001: Documented from Maryland during this survey from Sandy Hook, Maryland, to District of Columbia line.Watch List plant species, not officially listed by the State of Maryland nor by the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Division. Wiegand, 1999: A Watch List species in Maryland, documented to occur in the gorge during this survey from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia line. Wiegand, 1995: Reported during this survey from Sandy Hook west to Cumberland.
