Notes
Park Species Detail: Connery et al. (1998): Reported this species during searches of watersheds within the park during 1997. Dubuc et al. (1988): Beaver sign was encountered on 22 of the 39 watersheds studied on MDI; only 8 watersheds were heavily used by beaver. Coman (1987, 1981): present in every suitable habitat on MDI. Present at New Mill Meadow. Muller-Schwarze (1979?) foot and canoe survey of most possible locations for beaver colonies was conducted on MDI from 28 April 1977 through 30 November 1977. Results of these surveys are mapped. Acadia National Park (1976): population estimated at 200 in 1939 and 1962, 230 from 1964-1968, and 150 from 1969 to 1976; reported as common generally and well distributed throughout the park; considered to be an increasing populatin from 1962-1964, static population from 1965-1968, decreasing population from 1969-70, and a static population from 1971-1976. Manville (1942) All beaver on Mount Desert Island are reported to be descended from 2 pairs released by George Dorr in 1920 between Bubble Pond and Eagle Lake. Stupka (1933) reports 75 beaver on Mount Desert Island and only 10 of these are within park boundaries., Park Species Data Source: Connery et al. (1998); Dubuc et al.
