Found in Lake Superior and inland lakes (Johnsson, Shelton, and Jordan 1982). Designated subspecies as Notropis heterolepis heterolepis (Johnsson, Shelton, and Jordan 1982; Hubbs and Lagler 1949). The same authors would designate all Canadian populations as Notropis heterolepis heterolepis but the degree of variability over the entire Canadian range is great and has not received careful study (Scott and Crossman 1985).; Data Source: Kallemeyn 2000.
