Notes
Park Species Detail: Terrell, 1970: Frequent to locally very abundant in woods; areas 2 (Chain Bridge to Lock 10 parking area opposite Plummer's Island), 3 (Lock 10 to Carderock, north parking lot), 4 [Carderock to Cropley (parking area near Angler’s Inn)], 5 (Bear Island), 7 (Great Falls to Swain’s Lock). One colony in area Chain Bridge to Lock 10 parking area opposite Plummer's Island is over 100 feet in diameter. Basal leaves spotted, in contrast to H. virginianum. Fl. Begins late May. Cranberry Meadows, 1997: Common, Chain Bridge Flats below Arizona Bridge. Bilton, 1991: leaves only. Wiegand, 2001b: An uncommon plant species occurring in rich floodplain forest on slightly elevated terraces above the river between the C&O Canal and the more open, scoured bedrock. A single patch of Canada waterleaf (Hydrophyllum canadense) was seen near the base of the towpath several hundred meters upriver from Chain Bridge. This is another species that is common and widespread immediately upriver, and may be more abundant at Chain Bridge Flats than indicated here. Found in 1 site. A watch list (and otherwise uncommon) plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.), Park Species Data Source: Maxon, 1935; Cranberry Meadows, 1997; Terrell, 1970; Bilton, 1991; Wiegand, 2001b;
