Park Species Detail: Connery et al. (1998): Reported this species during searches of watersheds within the park during 1997.
Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996.
Mittelhauser (1991) none observed from Great Head to Hunter's Beach on 20 January 1991; 62 observed from Seawall Point to Ship Harbor area on 20 January 1991.
Long (1987): Common on MDI; reports a nest at Big Heath at Seawall on May 22 (no year given) with 11 eggs.
Russell (1984?) Abundant spring and fall migrant, abundant in winter, fairly common breeder. High tide concentration spots in the early fall are the upper portion of Bass Harbor Marsh, Aunt Betty's Pond, and Schooner Head Marsh. Beaver Dam Pond and the pond in front of ANP headquarters usually has a nesting pair.

Tyson and Bond (1941): Common summer duck of MDI; nest with 17 eggs observed at Eagle Lake (see picture in Tyson and Bond 1941); nest with 10 eggs on June 1, on border of Seal Cove Pond (no year given.
Sullivan (1937): A.r.rubripes considered a transient, common in late fall and winter on ponds and on sald water; A.r.tristis considered a scarce summer resident, abundant in the fall migration, adults and young seen near the end of June at Breakneck Pond in 1924; becoming common as a breeding bird.
Farley (1935) reports 2 birds (2 pairs?) at Mount Desert Island between 12 June and 22 June 1934.
Eliot (1931) Observed on Mount Desert Island during June 1931; 3 observed at Aunt Betty's Pond.
