Occurrence Notes
Recently been confirmed as an uncommon summer breeding resident of a variety of habitats on the Kaibab Plateau and locally around Mt. Trumbull and Mt. Logan. Wise-Gervais (2005c) states that Dusky Flycatcher was “regularly encountered on recovering burned ridges and steep upper slopes of the [Kaibab] Plateau” (307), while also noting that thickets of gambel oak or young aspen are preferred habitats within ponderosa or mixed conifer forest. Elsewhere in the region, Dusky Flycatcher is an uncommon to fairly common spring and fall migrant, but its true abundance is obscured by the difficulty of separating it from the very similar Hammond’s Flycatcher. Spring migrants appear through 2 Jun, with fall migrants arriving as early as 6 Aug. It is a casual winter visitor, with a single winter record of one seen and heard at RM 49.1 on 18 Feb 1998 (Roger K. Radd, Charles T. LaRue, Nikolle L. Brown, Casey A. Lott). Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
