Park Species Detail: Gilbert, 2006: We did not capture or observe Moles at SAHI, but Star-nosed Moles (Condylura cristata) and Eastern Mole (Scalopus aquaticus) vouchers occur for Nassau County (see reference, Table 51). Moles are primarily fossorial, preferring to tunnel underground for food, although the Star-nosed Mole also makes use of wet areas such as wet meadows, swamps, and streams to feed (Whitaker and Hamilton 1998). Moles are not routinely captured in small mammal traps and we did not expect to capture them in this study.
