Nativeness Notes
Legacy NPSpecies information may no longer be applicable, please remove if it is not applicable.
In legacy NPSpecies Cultivation value was Persistent with comment: Around abanodoned homesites.
In legacy NPSpecies Weedy value was Yes with comment: ECOLOGICAL THREAT. Exotic wisterias impair and overtake native shrubs and trees through strangling or shading. Climbing wisteria vines can kill sizable trees, opening the forest canopy and increasing sunlight to the forest floor, which in turn favors its aggressive growth. Chinese and Japanese wisterias are hardy and aggressive, capable of forming thickets so dense that little else grows.
In legacy NPSpecies Pest value was Yes with comment: http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/wist1.htm; http://www.issg.org/database/species/ecology.asp?si=287&fr=1&sts=sss
