Park Species Detail: Checklist information (abundance) updated 4/8/03 by professional judgement of Bruce Connery, ACAD wildlife biologist. Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): few are present on MDI during the summer; occurs regularly near Sieur de Monts Spring. First nest discovered in Maine was in 1967 near Sieur de Monts Spring. Russell (1984?) uncommon spring migrant and breeder; uncommon to common fall migrant; species has been extending its range northward over the past 25 years; Sieur de Monts Spring and along the Hemlock Trail is the best area to find breeding birds; breeding birds are also likely along the Seal Cove Fire Road. Bond (1969) few are present on MDI during the breeding season; one or 2 pairs occur regularly near Sieur de Monts Spring and a nest was discovered here in 1967. Long (1951) a male was observed at Southwest Harbor on 25 May 1950. Palmer (1949) Adult male seen on 17 April 1929 at Great Head when there was 4 inches of snow on the ground, later found dead on 23 April 1929 (Mrs. E.A. Anthony); male in winter plumage on 14 October 1934 at Great Head (A. Stupka). Bond (1949): Bond encountered 2 adult females (likely transients) on MDI Bond (19??) rather rare transient, may nest occasionally on MDI. Tyson and Bond (1941): Male seen at Long Pond in May 1936 (no other details given). Sullivan (1937) rare transient in spring; one seen at Great Head by Mrs. J.F. Anthony and A. Stupka on 14 October 1934; specimen taken by Tyson at Great Pond in 1936. Eliot (1931) Observed on Mount Desert Island during June 1931; male observed on the Triad on June 21, 1931.
