Notes
Park Species Detail: Checklist information (abundance) updated 4/11/03 by professional judgement of Bruce Connery, ACAD wildlife biologist. Long (1987): Nest discovered with young in 1986 at Bass Harbor Head (no month or day given for this observation). Russell (1984?) Rare resident, more frequently seen in late fall and winter; one breeding record. A diligent and systematic search during late fall or winter of the heavy spruce-fir forest near Otter Point, along Ocean Drive south of Otter Point, near Ship Harbor, near Bass Harbor, and near Pretty Marsh should produce at least one bird. Bond (1975): nest 12 feet up in a live spruce in open dry woodland near Seal Harbor on 10 June. Favour (1970): Observed on 22 December 1958 at Otter Point (see observation). Also observed on 30 December 1965 in the same area. Allen (1969): Present at Western Point. Bond (1969) more common than the three-toed woodpecker; a pair was reported from Flying Squadron Mountain in July 1932; a pair reported near Eagle Lake in July 1967; individuals encountered during early summer near Ship Harbor, on the border of old Seal Cove Road, and and the Blackwoods Camp Ground. No other hard evidence of nesting. Davis (1961) Observed or heard from his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI during the winter of 1958/59 and/or 1959/60. Bond (19??) Vagrant, a rare resident on the mainland, and may nest occasionally on MDI. Tyson and Bond (1941): Probably an occasional resident on MDI; pair seen on Flying Squadron Mtn on July 4, 1932. Sullivan (1937): Very rare winter visitor; specimen shot about 1900 in Filliettaz collection; one seen on MDI on 23 December 1933; pair observed on Flying Squadron Mountain on 4 July 1932 by A. Stupka., Park Species Data Source: Witt (1997); Long (1987); Russell (1984?); Favour (1970); Allen (1969); Bond (1969); Davis (1961); Tyson and Bond (1941); Sullivan (1937)
