Garman (1991): Uncommon, at least in aspen-birch and red spruce habitats on MDI; 71 short-tailed shrews were captured out of 1107 small mammals trapped during 1987 and 1988 in aspen-birch and red spruce habitats.

Park Species Detail: Garman (1991): 71 captures of 71 individuals during trapping in 1987 and 1988 in aspen-birch and red spruce habitats. Coman (1987) considered this a common species on Mount Desert Island. Coman (1981): Present on the summit of Cadillac Mountain; abundant in some years on MDI. Godin (1977) as far as is known, this is the only mammal with a poisonous bite. Packie and Nadeau (1975): Present in the park on MDI at Hadlock Pond; 2 individuals trapped here. Calhoun and Arata (1957): trapped on MDI during 1952, exact locations unknown. Calhoun (1956): trapped on MDI during 1951, exact locations unknown. Calhoun (1951) trapped on MDI during 1950, exact locations unknown. Calhoun (1950): Trapped on MDI during November 1949, exact locations unknown. Manville (1942) suggest this species is common and well distributed over the island. Manville (1942) report this species on the summit of Cadillac Mountain. Branin (1939): Common on MDI; 35 specimens taken; taken on Cadillac Mountain. Branin (1936): trapped during the summer of 1934 at the edge of a mixed woods of oak, maple, birch, and aspen, and at a point where this merges with the grassy tundra east of Champlain Mountain. Johnson (1927) Noted on MDI during 1,473 trap nights between 23 June and 25 August 1924.
