Occurrence Notes
A very rare summer resident of open desertscrub and riparian habitats in the western portion of the region, where it may breed. Although it is most often seen in the vicinity of upper Lake Mead, Toroweap, and Supai, there are two potential records farther east. A nighthawk seen along the Colorado River at RM 8 on 7 May 1989 (Charles T. LaRue), and another seen in sagebrush meadows near Desert View on 16 May 2007 (Brian P. Gatlin) were very early for Common Nighthawks, and may have been this species. Any nighthawk seen before the end of May should be closely scrutinized. Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
