In legacy NPSpecies Pest value was Yes with comment: Natureserve I-Rank: High/Low. I-Rank Reasons Summary: Pyrus communis, or the common pear, is found outside of cultivation in must of the north and southeast, and west to Texas and Kansas. It has also escaped in a few states in the west, including Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho and Utah. This species doesn't seem to be an aggresive invader in most of its range, however, in Oregon in the Willamette Valley, it is invading prairies where rare native plant species grow, including the federally listed Erigeron decumbens ssp. decumbens. In at least one site in the Willamette Valley, Oregon where Erigeron decumbens ssp. decumbens is found, its presence it referred to as a 'substantial invasion'. While this species has a broad range outside of cultivation, it is persisting but not causing damage to biodiversity, except in local portion of its range. As this species is widely cultivated in the United States, and thus transported throughout many states, its spread should be monitored especially since it has demonstrated its ability to invade at least one high quality site where rare native species are found. This is probably not a serious threat at GUCO, but should be monitored (swm-CUPN)
