Park Species Detail: Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): Present at the shore by Wonderland; very common on MDI. Russell (1984?) common spring through fall; maximum fall count of 11 at Otter Point on 16 September 1972 (W. Russell). Allen (1969): Present at Western Point; singing males observed (presumably on territory). Bond (1969) has increased as a summer resident on MDI. Davis (1961): Present in his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI between 25 June and 5 July 1959; considered a breeding bird. Long (1953) Numbers of this species are extremely high on MDI; commonly encountered in the tallest conifers and the lowest of mixed woodlands. Nest found on MDI on 27 June 1950 (R. Long and H. Harrison). Long (1951) a nest was found at Southwest Harbor on 14 June 1950 with 3 fully fledged young. Palmer (1949): an early observation was on 13 May 1929 on MDI. Bond (19??) fairly common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Common summer resident on MDI; found at Sieur de Mont Spring, near Bar Harbor, at Eagle Lake, Aunt Betty's Pond, Indian Point, Ship Harbor, and near Asticou. Sullivan (1937) Summer resident not uncommon in deep mixed woods containing hemlock, May to October; young birds just out of nest seen on 30 July 1927 (no location given). Eliot (1931) Rare in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; Pair found in the tall trees at the foot of Brown Mountain (=Norumbega Mountain) on June 28, 1931; another reported from Dog Mountain; also observed in the tall trees between Sargent Mountain and The Bubbles on 2 July 1931.
