Notes
Park Species Detail: Long (1987): Females with broods have been observed at Long Pond and Bubble Pond. Russell (1984?) rare late spring and fall migrant, accidental in winter. Every year since 1971, a pair was appeared in very late May and early June on The Tarn. These usually stay for about a week and then disappear. Duley and North (1984) observed from Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Adamus (1983) Breeding in Maine, including the ANP region. Bond (1969) females with broods have been observed on Long Pond and Bubble Pond in July (no years given). Palmer (1949) "one of the most abundant summer residents in the lakes of Northern Maine (1867)" Bond (19??) occasional summer resident on fresh-water lakes (e.g. Long Pond); more numerous as a transient and winter resident. Juvenile individuals have been observed. Tyson and Bond (1941): Rare in summer on MDI, formerly more numerous; observed an individual with a brood of downy young on Long Pond (no dates given). Sullivan (1937): 25 observed between Mount Desert and Cranberry Islands on 21 December 1934 by C.K. Herbst and D. Kuser. Eliot (1931) Not observed on MDI during June or July 1931 but previously reported from the island; Bred at Great Pond about 5 years ago. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R.
