Park Species Detail: Salle, 1972: one of the dominant species of the canopy of most wooded areas along the Yorktown Colonial Parkway./Loetterle, 1970: forms canopy on Jamestown Island over a scattered understory./Ingram, 1998: Very common; forests and edge./North, 1984: Abundant, low areas, including swamps, bogs, and shores, uplands, including dry to mesic fields and woods. A core taken from the largest loblolly pine, on a hummock approximately 20 meters east of the footbridge, indicated the tree to be 22 years old.
