Park Species Detail: Witt (1997) and Long (1987) report this species in areas adjacent to the park.
Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996.
Long (1987): Observed at Bar Harbor and other towns on MDI; All nests reported in chimneys on MDI; no specific details of nesting dates or locations given.
North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986.
Russell (1984?) Common spring through fall. As a migrant, chimney swifts can and do occur everywhere. There have been no known occurrences in our area of chimney swifts using hollow trees for nesting sites.
Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984.
Bond (1969) frequently seen at Bar Harbor and about other villages.
Bond (19??) fairly common summer resident.
Tyson and Bond (1941): Common on MDI; nests in chimneys.
Sullivan (1937): Common summer resident, May to September (Pellew).
Farley (1935) reported birds at Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor and a bird on the southeast part of MDI (park record?) and Western Mountains, observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934.
Eliot (1931): Uncommon in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931 (but common on MDI as a whole); Dimishing species, long ago most cottage chimneys harbored a nest or two. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 8 June 1916.
