Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Six new and six previously reported occurrences for Rustling wild-petunia (Ruellia strepens) were documented (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line). Several new occurrences reported for Frederick and Washington counties during this survey significantly increase the known distribution of rustling wild-petunia in Maryland. The groups contain between 10 and 200 plants with a total known population along the Potomac River estimated at 700-800 plants. BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats: Little Falls & upper Chain Bridge, Allen Belden, VA NHP. Prairie Savannah; often has only cleistogamous flowers. Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Rustling wild-petunia (Ruellia strepens), listed as a highly rare plant species in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. Twenty-two plants in bud and early flower were growing in rich sandy substrate in mostly shady floodplain forest habitat. The plants were scattered across a 5x5 meter area, ten meters inside floodplain forest from the edge of adjacent savanna habitat.The area has a broken canopy and floods only during larger storm events. Suitable habitat for rustling wild-petunia is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence could be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Found at 1 site. A Highly Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated. Wiegand, 1995: One unconfirmed occurrence in the survey area from Sandy Hook West to Cumberland, Maryland., Park Species Data Source: BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats;Bartgis, 1993;Bilton, 1991-Ferry Hill;Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;
