Notes
Park Species Detail: Witt (1997) and Long (1987) report this species in areas adjacent to the park. Sharp (1997) Recorded during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996; not sure if this species was observed within park boundaries. Long (1987): species first appeared on MDI during the summer of 1961; fledglings have been observed, but no nests have been found. Russell (1984?) abundant to very abundant fall migrant; abundant winterer; common spring migrant; rare breeder; somewhat erratic; it has become common only in the last 25 years and was first recorded on a CBC in 1951; in the summer of 1969, adults were seen feeding young in both Somesville and Seal Harbor. Bond (1969) become established as a summer resident on MDI during 1961; fledgling being fed by adults have been observed near Seal Harbor in July and at Somesville in September. Davis (1961) Observed or heard from his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI during the winter of 1958/59 and/or 1959/60. Bond (19??) winter resident of variable abundance; probably has nested on the mainland near Castine. Tyson and Bond (1941): specimen taken at Southwest Harbor on 5 December 1921 (no other details). Sullivan (1937) Irregular winter visitor; in 1916, a flock of about 50 spent 2 weeks in Bar Harbor; in the winter of 1921, a large flock visited Southwest Harbor. Eliot (1916) reported this species at Northeast Harbor early in 1916., Park Species Data Source: Davis (1961) Legacy NPSpecies information may no longer be applicable, please remove if it is not applicable. In legacy NPSpecies Residency was Unknown with comment: Breeding on MDI (Witt 1997) although no details of nesting within park boundaries to date. Adamus (1983) breeding throughout Maine. Sibley (2000) year-round resident throughout Maine.
