Notes
Park Species Detail: Lea, 2000: Carex planispicata Naczi (Flat-spiked Sedge)Frequent. Rich, dry to mesic forests. Locally common at Bear Island and Great Falls Park, Virginia. This species, widespread in the eastern United States, but obscured by nomenclatural and typification problems, was recently described by Naczi (1999), who also gave the fust reports of the species from the Gorge, based on an old collection at US from Plummers Island. It has long been treated, evidently erroneously, as C. amphibola Steudel var. amphibola (e.g., Femald 1950). C. planispicata is fairly distinct from true C.amphibola, and is more likely to be confused with C. oligocarpa, which occurs in similar habitat. (see Naczi, 1999) [From Bartonia, 2002: The very similar C. oligocarpa, which occurs in similar habitat, has generally fewer perigynia per spike, with the perigynia having distinct beaks.-HH] . Mid-May to early June. 1043,1067 (US); 1011,1082,1139 (MARY); 1707 (GMUF); 1045 (MICH); 879, 1042, 1068, 1141 (Tawes); 1708 (Grfa); 1044A (Frost); 1069 (Aacc)., Park Species Data Source: Lea, 2000
