Park Species Detail: Killip, 1953: In 1935, known only from the mainland. Terrell, 1970: Infrequent; woods in areas 2 (Chain Bridge to Lock 10 parking area opposite Plummer's Island), ), 3 (Lock 10 to Carderock, north parking lot), 5 (Bear Island). Fl. Late May. Maxon, 1935: Species included on the strength of satisfactory records, but no specimen is preserved. Bartgis, 1993: Found at PawPaw Bends North, on the lower slopes, a larval food of the giant swallowtail. This butterfly is state listed as a Species In Need of Conservation and is found here. Wiegand, 2001: Documented from Maryland during this survey from Sandy Hook, Maryland, to District of Columbia line.Watch List plant species, not officially listed by the State of Maryland nor by the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Division. Wiegand, 1999: A Watch List species in Maryland, documented to occur in the gorge during this survey from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia line.
