"Patton et al. indicates they are native to Missouri River drainage in Wyoming. Lee et al. 1980 indicates native in WY, but Brown 1971 indicates not native to Montana (where Lee also indicates native). Fishes of Wyoming (G. T. Baxter and M. D. Stone, 1995) states ""Whether or not the black bullhead is native to Wyoming is questionable. Simon (1951) indicated that it is natvie to the North Platte River And some northeastern drainages, but it was not collected by Evermann and Cox (1896) in habitats they surveyed in central and northeastern Wyoming befor the turn of the century"".
