Occurrence Notes
Experimental population in 1997/1998 to establish a migratory flock in the Rocky Mountains. Due to problems during migration two birds were captured and released in YNP. Both have since died. The YNP bird program receives occasional reports of whooping cranes in YNP, but none could be confirmed: Data Source: Lisa Baril - YNP Ornithologist.

Non-native
Nativeness Notes
Legacy NPSpecies information may no longer be applicable, please remove if it is not applicable. In legacy NPSpecies Cultivation value was Unknown with comment: This bird probably was native fauna during the Pleistocene. There is weak evidence of breeding or regularly occuring in YELL since the park was established in 1872. Efforts to introduce 4 ultra-light birds were purely experimental (i.e "experimental/non-essential"), more of a good faith effort, and not based on the science of the day.
