Tulane University voucher specimens Darwin #2040 and Dowling #216 and #143 were misidentified (as Verbena urticifolia) and redetermined to be Verbena scabra by D.M. Ferguson (2008). Verbena scabra and Verbena urticifolia look nearly identical in the field, but Verbena scabra has nutlets that are ribbed-reticulate.
