Park Species Detail: Lea, Chris (2003):Honckenya peploides (L.) Ehrh. ssp. robusta (Fern.) Hulten. SEABEACH SANDWORT. Caryophyllaceae. Native. Perennial herb. May-Sep. Beach. Rare. A single plant was found in 2000; a second plant, many kilometers away, was found in 2001. Reported from Virginia end by Higgins et al. (1971). Collector ID#'s: Lea 2270, Hamilton 524. Honckenya peploides had been listed as historical for Maryland (Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Division 2001), having been found previously in the state in 1940 (Tatnall 1946). The Virginia end of Assateague Island is at or near the southern limit of the species¿ range along the United States Atlantic coast (Higgins et al. 1971; Gleason and Cronquist 1991; Harvill et al. 1992)./ Hill, 1986: Native. Perennial succulent herb. ?May-July. Beach, dunegrass. Rare, reported by Higgins as Arenaria peploides L., a synonym, from VA end, 10/6/66 (MARY). (Higgins #186).
