Notes
Park Species Detail: Britt, 1993: Pomoxis annularis, white crappie (resident, introduced) The white crappie is found naturally in freshwater streams and lakes from the southern Great Lakes to Nebraska, south to Alabama and Texas east to North Carolina to New York. It has been introduced to other areas throughout North America. White crappie generally congregate in loose aggregations around submerged stumps, trees, brush and/or boulders in large lakes and pools of larger rivers. White crappie are mature at 1 to 3 years, 180-250 mm (TL) and live to 7-9 years. The adults are 180-350 mm in length (fL). Their diet consists of plankton, a small planktonic insect as juvenile and almost exclusively small fish as adults. They generally feed in open water. Spawning occurs March throughJuly when ambient water temperatures are 55°-57°P, with peak spawning occurring between 61-68 °p. Males build the nest on a variety of substrates in bays, coves, or river pools in 3-8 feet of clear water, near brush piles, stumps and/or rocks, and guard the eggs until hatching. White crappie have been reported caught by anglers in the lower portions of Rock Creek., Park Species Data Source: Britt et al 1993
