Notes
Park Species Detail: 'Britt, 1993: Lepomis gibbosus, pumpkinseed (resident, native) Distribution of this species includes the Atlantic Slope, Great Lakes drainage, upper Mississippi basin and many western states. Pumpkinseeds tend to inhabit still, clear water with aquatic vegetation and organic debris. Inhabited environments also include low-salinity estuaries. The diet of this species includes dragonfly nymphs, ants, small salamanders, amphipods, mayfly nymphs, midge larvae, worms, snails, water beetles and small fish. The spawning season begins in the spring when waters reach 20°C (68°F) and lasts through early summer. Males build circular nests in shallow water. Adhesive eggs stick to the bottom substrate until hatching takes place./ in 3 days at about 27.7°C (82°F). Adult size is 78-400 mm (3.07-15.7 in), total length. Maturity is reached in about 2 years., Park Species Data Source: Britt et al 1993; Dietemann, 1975
