Occurrence Notes
A rare spring and fall migrant along the Colorado River. It typically occurs in small groups, but flocks of up to 200 birds have been seen at least twice. There are two winter records: a bird seen at the base of Glen Canyon Dam on 30 Jan 1995, and three seen below Plateau Point on 14 Feb 1989 (Rene Morey). Away from the river, American White Pelican is a casual migrant which has been seen only twice: an injured bird in Toroweap Valley, 10-20 July 1970 (Meribeth M. Riffey) and a flock of 26 migrating past Lipan Point, 7 Oct 2008 (Jim Logan, Brian P. Gatlin, et al.). Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
