Park Species Detail: Sharp (1997) Recorded during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996, not sure is species was observed within park boundaries. Long (1987): Common in the late 1930's; First breeding record for the United States bas in 1936 at Ship Harbor; Several pairs present on western MDI since 1979. Russell (1984?) common spring and fall migrant; breeding status uncertain; commonly bred in the 1930's and 1940's during the large spruce bud worm outbreaks, but since then they have not been known to breed; occasionally abundant in the fall, especially along the shore at Otter Point. Bond (1969) occasionally common summer resident, but usually very rare or absent; the late 1930's was the best period for this warbler; in 1936 a nest with 6 eggs was found west of Ship Harbor, this was the first nest record of this species from the US and is still the southernmost record. Davis (1961): Questionable record in his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI between 25 June and 5 July 1959. Bond (1955): Not always present in the Ship Harbor area. Long (1953) Formerly breeding at Ship Harbor (in 1938, Bond); Bond and Long searched this area around 1951 and could not find the species. No longer breeds on MDI. Palmer (1949): A nest was under construction near Ship Harbor on 2 June 1936. Bond (19??) rare to common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Common summer resident on MDI; most numerous south of the Seawall-McKinley Road; Occasionally found at Seal Harbor, Fernald's Point, and Southwest Harbor; Nest fount at Ship Harbor Bond (1937): Common summer resident on MDI during 1936; about 10 pairs were observed on the southern end of the island; nesting at Ship Harbor. Sullivan (1937) Very rare transient and occasional summer resident; sever seen in 1924 near Bar Harbor; pair reported (feeding young) at Asticou in 1926, many other locations given.
