Park Species Detail: Hill, 1986: Native. Perennial herb, evergreen. Fruits red, fleshy. May-June. Woodland. Rare on Assateague, seen only in the Green Run area. See Vegetation Mapping Report. Frequent throughout MD, but infrequent towards coast. Fruits red, persistent throughout the winter. Requires acid humus, found only in oldest woodlands on the island. (Higgins #368). The Higgins specimens were not found at MARY. MD & VA. Slide: B85-11./
