Nativeness Notes
Striped bass are native to streams and bays of the Atlantic coast from the St. Lawrence River in the north down to the St. Johns River in Florida, as well as to streams flowing into the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Louisiana. They were introdced to the Pacific coast in 1879 and 1882 when a total of 432 fish from two shipments were planted in the Sacramento-San Joaquin estuary. So successful was the introduction that by 1888 a commercial fishery had started up for them and the catch reached over 1.2 million pounds by 1899 (Moyle pg 285).; Data Source: Moyle, P.B. 1976.
