Notes
Park Species Detail: Terrell, 1970: Canal bank in area 8 [Swain’s Lock to Pennyfield Lock (north end)]; fl. Mid May. Lea, 2000: Carex conjuncta F. Boott (Soft Fox Sedge)Frequent. Primarily at Chain Bridge Flats, occurring in moist swales in channel shelf woodlands. Occurs less frequently in shaded floodplain forests. This species has been regarded as historical in Maryland (Maryland Natural Heritage Program, 1994). It is now known to be fairly widely distributed, but somewhat uncommon, in the Piedmont and Ridge and Valley provinces in the state. It is a watchlist species in Virginia (Killeffer, 1999). Chain Bridge Flats may be an important population center for this species,which is evidently uncommon in the region. This is the first report of C. conjuncta for Fairfax County. Mid-May to late June. 1098 (US); 1089 (MICH); 1702 (GMUF); 735,1094,1159 (Tawes); 533 (Frost); 2091 (Grfa). Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered extirpated plant, in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Soft fox sedge (Carex conjuncta), listed as a rare sedge in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. Several thousand stems were dispersed in small groups across more than 50 acres of habitat Suitable habitat for soft fox sedge is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence would be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats. Found at 2 sites. A Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 2001: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line) during this survey. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated., Park Species Data Source: BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats;Bartgis, 1993;Lea, 2000;TNC, 1999;Terrell, 1970;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;
