Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Two new and six previously known occurrences for Carey's sedge (Carex careyana) were successfully documented during this survey (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line). All of these sites occur in the Potomac Gorge, in upper floodplain forest habitat, in rich sandy alluvium and beneath a full canopy. The species is not currently known in land outside of the Potomac Gorge. Lea, 2000: Carex careyana Torrey ex Dewey (Carey's Sedge)Infrequent. In rich mesophytic forests on alluvial terraces. Recently considered historical for Maryland (Maryland Natural Heritage Program, 1994), it was rediscovered in the state during this survey. About 12 stations in the Gorge, mostly upstream from the Capital Beltway, are now known, though it is seldom numerous at a given site. It has been recently discovered in Garrett County, the only other known Maryland site for this calciphile. C. careyana is a watchlist species in Virginia (Killeffer, 1999). This distinctive sedge can be identified in winter. Late April to mid-May. G. Fleming 8885 (GMUF); 797 (Tawes); 1330 (Grfa); Sigafoos 612 (Usgs). Wiegand, 1999: Carey's sedge (Carex careyana) is currently listed as extirpated in Maryland. Six (6) new occumences for this rare sedge were reported during this survey. The species is not known in Maryland outside of the Potomac Gorge. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;Boone, 1986;Lea, 2000;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001
