Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Three (3) new and eighteen (18) previously reported occurrences for Deciduous holly (Ilex decidua) were successfully documented from Sandy Hook, Maryland, to District of Columbia. These vary greatly in size from 10 plants to approximately 400. Total number of plants seen during 1999-2000 field surveys is estimated at slightly more than 1,000. Nearly 90% of these occurred in the two mile stretch of scoured bedrock terrace habitats between Falls Island and Sherwin Island. Terrell, 1970: Infrequent; rocky woods in areas 4 [Carderock to Cropley (parking area near Angler’s Inn)], 5 (Bear Island), 6 (Great Falls; islands overlooking Falls). Fl. Begins early May. Bartgis, 1993: State Threatened plant, in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Possumhaw (Ilex decidua), listed as a highly rare plant species in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. Three shrubs were seen, but more may be present. They were growing in well drained sandy substrate between large rocks near the river, an area that probably floods annually. Suitable habitat for possumhaw is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence could be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. In Maryland, this species is listed as deciduous holly but it is the same plant. Found at 1 site. A Highly Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Currently listed in Maryland as threatened and documented to occur in the gorge during this survey from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia line., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;Boone, 1986;TNC, 1999;Terrell, 1970;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;
