Notes
Park Species Detail: Britt, 1993: Ameiurus nebulosus, brown bullhead (resident, native) The brown bullhead is widely distributed in the eastern half of the United States. On the East Coast, it ranges from Maine to Florida and in the mid-west from the Great Lakes to Texas. It generally inhabits still or slow-flowing warm waters such as ponds, lakes and slow-moving streams. Adults are commonly 179 to 345 mm long and weigh 0.4 to 2.2 pounds. They may reach a maximum length between 18 and 25 inches (usually at age 10 years or older). The brown bullhead is a bottom feeder and forages at night or late afternoon. They locate their food by taste using their barbels. The brown bullhead's diet consists of mollusks, insects, fishes, fish eggs, crayfish, algae, scuds, and midges. Spawning occurs in the spring between April and June, as the water temperature rises to 70°-80°F. Sexual maturity is reachedi in 3 years. Egg production ranges from 2,000 to 13,000 per female. During spawning, mature fish move into shallow waters for nesting. Nests are circular, several inches deep and have a diameter slightly larger than the adult's length. Both the male and female construct the nest. Nests may be found injopen sandy or muddy bottoms, or under logs, brush or banks. They may spawn several times during a season. Eggs hatch approximately 7 days in 69°F and 5 days in nOF. Both adults guard the eggs during incubation. Brown bullhead were collected from Rock Creek during the present study., Park Species Data Source: Britt et al 1993
