Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: One (1) new and six (6) previously reported occurrences for Leatherwood (Dirca palustris) were successfully documented from Sandy Hook, Maryland, to District of Columbia. Total number of shrubs in these seven occutrences is estimated at 150 - 200. The largest of these on Offutt Island contains approximately 50 shrubs. All of the individuals seen during this survey were heavily browsed by deer. Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line. Found in Washington County, Cedar Grove, Ferry Hill, Snyders Landing, and Dargan Bend Woods. Wiegand, 2001b: Leatherwood (Dircapalustris) is a shrub listed as extirpated from D.C. It was last reported from Chain Bridge Flats by G.R. Vasey when he collected it in the vicinity of Little Falls in 1885. It has not been reported or collected from this area since that time, 116 years ago. No specific survey effort to relocate this species at Chain Bridge Flats was made during 1999-2000 field surveys of the area. However, suitable habitat remains intact in the area so there is a remote possibility that the species still occurs here.Status surveys for leatherwood are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats. Wiegand, 2001b: Found at 0 sites. A Presumed Extirpated (SX) plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Currently listed in Maryland as threatened and documented to occur in the gorge during this survey from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia line. Wiegand, 1995: Four updated occurrences documented in the survey area from Sandy Hook West to Cumberland, Maryland., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;Boone, 1986;Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 1995;Wiegand, 2001b;
