Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: One new and six previously reported occurrences for Small-flowered hemicarpha (Lipocarpha micrantha) were successfully documented (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line) . The occurrences varied in size from 10 to 50 clumps each, with a total of approximately 220 observed during the current survey. All but one of the currently reported sites for this species in Maryland occur in the Potomac Gorge. This sedge is very small, clumps often being no larger than the size of a quarter, and is easily overlooked. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Small-flowered hemicarpha (Lipocarpha rnicranfha), listed as a highly rare plant species in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. Six clumps of plants were growing on the edge of a scour pond . . .This sedge is very small and inconspicuous, making accurate survey for the species extremely difficult. No plants were found here during the very wet growing season of year 2000. Suitable habitat for small-flowered hemicarpha is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence would be more extensive than reported here. Chris Lea reported (1997 field form) Four discrete sub-populations in the Chain Bridge Flats area. Although these were specifically searched for during year 2000 surveys, when river levels remained unusually high during much of the growing season, they were not be relocated.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Found at 1 site. A Highly Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated. Six (6) new occurrences for the state-endangered Small-flowered hemimpha (Lipocarpha micrantha) were reported. This sedge is very small, clumps often being no larger than the size of a quarter, and is easily overlooked. Most of the known populations for this species in Maryland occur along the Potomac River, and especially in the Potomac Gorge., Park Species Data Source: TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;
