Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Seven occurrences for Short's rockcress (Arabis shortii) were documented during this survey. Two of these were new sites and five were successful updates. The occurrences are small, the largest containing 27 plants, and the total for the seven occurrences being less than 100 plants. There are an additional five sites in the survey area (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line) where Short's rockcress has been documented in the past, but were not successllly updated during this survey. Terrell, 1970: (A. dentata of D. C. Fl.). Quent to frequent in woods; areas 2 (Chain Bridge to Lock 10 parking area opposite Plummer's Island), 4 [Carderock to Cropley (parking area near Angler’s Inn)], 7 (Great Falls to Swain’s Lock), 8 [Swain’s Lock to Pennyfield Lock (north end)], 9 (Pennyfield Lock to Seneca). Fl. Late April-early My specimens do not entirely agree with published descriptions Species in floras, but I conclude they belong to the A. shortii-persi Group which has apparently never been adequately studied. Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line and Washington County, Dargan Bend Woods. Wiegand, 2001b: Short's rockcress (Arabis show) is listed as historical from D.C. It was last reported from Chain Bridge Flats by Baltars when he collected it here in 1963. It has not been reported or collected from this area since that time, nearly 40 years ago. This species is reported sporadically from various locations in the Potomac Gorge and, if the habitat is protected, will likely reappear at this site in the future. No specific survey effort to relocate this species at Chain Bridge Flats was made during 1999-2000 field surveys of the area. However, suitable habitat remains intact in the area so there is a good possibility that the species still occurs here.Status surveys for Short's rockcress are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats. Found in Fletchers Floodplain Survey Site. 1 site found. A Possibly Expirpated plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated. Wiegand, 1995: Four new occurrences, one updated occurrence, (one unconfirmed occurrence) documented in the survey area from Sandy Hook West to Cumberland, Maryland.
