Occurrence Notes
A very rare and local summer resident of chaparral and dense ponderosa pine-Gambel Oak forests on the west side of the Kaibab Plateau. There are five records, four of which are from Swamp Point: one on 7 Jun 1982 (Joseph G. Hall), one on 22 Jun 2008 (Brian P. Gatlin), one on 27 Jun 1999 (John P. DeLong, Jessica V. Jewell, Nicolas E. Pappani), and one on 9 Jul 1971 (Joseph G. Hall). Zack Zdinak heard one at Mangum Spring, also on the Kaibab Plateau on 31 Jul 2007. Given the species’ presence over many years, it is likely a local summer breeding resident, with the general lack of records due primarily to the remoteness of the locations where it occurs. Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
