We have all four of the Venessa sp. found in the 48 United States. The three “lady” species look similar. The V. virginiensis is distinguishable by its only having two larger eyespots on the hindwing’s underside. It is the least frequently seen of our Venessa sp., but should be found throughout much of the Grand Canyon. Larval host plants are in the Asteraceae family, such as Pussy-toes Antennaria sp., Western Pearly Everlasting Anaphalis sp., and Jersey Cudweed Pseudognaphalium luteoalbum.
